A cultural history is an attempt to trace the genesis,
growth, changes, pitfalls and highlights of a culture. The cultural history of a community
can be traced and reconstructed using the hints from the language and the literature and
taking the cues from the arts prevalent among the people. Archeological study of
excavations and inscriptions and numismatic study of ancient coins can also provide
information on the distinct stages in the growth of a culture. We attempt in this lesson
to give an account of different sources of evidence that help us build the history of
Tamil culture.
