Numismatics provides lots of insight into the culture of a
people. The design, the metal used, the signs and the numerals on the coins - all these
reveal certain capabilities of the people who used them. They also throw light on the
trade, culture and politics of the land. The coins discovered on the river-bed of
Amaravathi reveal that the Tamils of Third Century BC had mastered the art or science of
coin - moulding! The coins of Pandya dynasty (3rd Century BC) are made of copper and
contain images of horse and tortoise. The Roman coins made of silver, near திருப்பூர்,
testifies to the trade-links of Tamils with the Romans.
