In the early days of their establishment, Mutts took a lot of interest in the promotion of religious principles and practices, and in the maintenance of temples. The Mutt-Heads themselves were exemplary scholars. In due course, the purpose and the practice of the Mutts degenerated. Yet the contributions of the Mutts to religions and to Tamil are remarkable. Religion-oriented literary works (of the 'Sitrilakkiam' genre) were produced by the Mutts.
