Following the Reorganisation of the States in India on linguistic basis, the local language became the official language of the state concerned. Tamil is the official language of the State of Tamil nadu. The Administrative Terms in English so far used in the government are necessarily to be rendered into Tamil. This process is known as Official Language - Translation. Apart from the first introductory and the last summing up units, the five middle units deal with official language, English as official language, Tamil as official language, the pioneers in preparing the official and administrative terms in Tamil and the methods to be followed in rendering them into Tamil. The first of the above units defines official language as one that assists in running the government. During the sangam period and later, Tamil continued as official language in Tamil Nadu. However, a mixed language of Sanskrit and Tamil has been created by the Pallavas and Kalabhras. Tamil continued as official language under the Cholas. Pandyas sanskritised the official language of Tamil. Foreigners like Moghuls, Marattas, Telugus and the English happened to be the rulers and thus foreign words gained currency in the official Tamil. Thus the words அசல், கிஸ்தி, ரொக்கம், ஜாமீன், சிபாரிசு etc., entered Tamil. In the second unit you will hear about English imposed on Indians as the official language. The third unit tells you about the setting up an official language committee. This committee made efforts to replace English by Tamil in the governance of Tamil Nadu. Field as களம், expert as வல்லுநர், collector as ஆட்சியர் and proposal as கருத்துரு are examples. The fifth unit tells you that about 9000 official terms were translated into Tamil.
