The second composer whose life-work is recounted is அருணாசலக் கவிராயர். An ardent devotee of Lord Rama, கவிராயர் revealed an inborn musical talent by composing at a very young age. This section enumerates his musical achievements and contributions besides presenting his personal background.
கவிராயர் is best remembered for his இராம நாடகக் கீர்த்தனை, a compilation of 258 songs narrating the Ramayana. This was the first musical drama or opera in Tamil and கவிராயர் came to be known as இராமாயணக் கவிஞர். Kavirayar’s இராமாயணக் கீர்த்தனைகள் are sung in unusual melodies. A list of these melodies which are sung in concerts today is presented. Noted classical singers like எம்.எஸ். சுப்புலட்சுமி and டி.கே. பட்டம்மாள் have rendered these songs and heightened their appeal.
