  • Bharathidasan’s poems are characterised by a zeal for social reform. He rose against the oppression to which women were subjected in his days. He expected women to be given as much rights and privileges as the menfolk enjoyed. To be able to demand and exercise their rights in the society, he wanted women to be ‘educated’. Education, he thought, would liberate them from the meaningless traditional practices and irrational faiths and fears. This lesson attempts to give you a picture of Bharathidasan’s vision of an ideal woman. With plenty of illustrations from Bharathidasan’s poems, we present his views about women-liberation and his portrayal of revolutionary women at different stages of growth in life.
