    ARTICULATION OF THE VOWELS

Dealing with the production of vowel sounds this lesson presents the grammar of the birth of each Tamil vowel. The facts presented in this aspect by linguists are in agreement with the old grammars of Tamil language.

Nine units of this lesson proceed with this topic in a logical manner. The first unit gives us in general the birth, or the production, of vowel letters or sounds as per தொல்காப்பியர் and நன்னூலார், The second unit compares and contrasts these two views. In the third unit, you will learn about the difference between the places of production and classification of Tamil vowel letters.

All the twelve vowels are divided into three groups of (1) and ஆ, (2) இ, ஈ, எ, ஏ and (3) உ, ஊ, ஒ, ஓ and ஓள. Each of these groups is taken up in the next three units of 4,5 and 6.

Similarities and differences between Tolkappiam and Nannool in describing the birth of vowel sounds are presented in the seventh unit. Ninth unit takes up the birth of pure as well as combined vowels as depicted in grammars and linguistics. It is established that Tolkappiam happens to be the prelude to linguistics.

From the summarizing unit of 9, you will realize how the later scientific approach to the study of phonetics has only got a basis in old Tamil grammars, especially தொல்காப்பியம். and are produced by opening the mouth, இ,ஈ,எ,ஏ and by making a contact between the upper teeth with the back of the tongue and உ, ஊ, ஒ, ஓ and ஒள through the rounding of lips. This classification resembles the linguistic grouping of central, front and back vowel sounds.
