A journal can be referred to as a medium used to transmit printed news and ideas. Collecting news, editing collected news, broadcasting news through different media such as radio, television and newspapers is the role of journals.

Journals are classified on the basis of the period in which they are published, the content of the journal and quality of the journal. Period journals are classified as dailies, weekly journals, monthly journals and yearly journals. Journals that appear in a particular period are known as periodicals. Periodicals are classified on the basis of the periodicity of publication, like weekly, monthly, quarterly etc., Journals can also be classified based on the news they publish and the target audience. They are quality journals, journals for the common man and the yellow journals that poison the mind of the reader.

Newspapers are published on a daily basis. Previous day events are usually what newspapers publish. News such as daily news, foreign news, business news and sports news are usually the content of newspapers. Cartoon depicting day to day events are also a part of newspapers. The standard for the size of the newspaper is common all over the world and is known as “டெம்மி” (Demy). A page in a newspaper is divided into eight columns. Newspapers are classified into morning and evening dailies based on the time of print. Examples of morning dailies are “தினத்தந்தி, and தினமலர்” and evening dailies are “மாலை மலர் and மாலைமுரசு”. Monthlies are ‘கலைமகள்’, ‘செந்தமிழ்ச் செல்வி’ etc.,
