    P20224 திருத்தொண்டும் காதலும்
Devoted service and love of God

In this lesson we shall look at the words of பெரியாழ்வார், தொண்டரடிப் பொடி ஆழ்வார், திருப்பாணாழ்வார், குலசேகர ஆழ்வார் and ஆண்டாள், They worshipped God with garlands of flowers and words.

பெரியாழ்வார் born in ஸ்ரீவில்லிப்புத்தூர் has composed 473 songs known as பெரியாழ்வார் திருமொழி. It begins with the famous song பல்லாண்டு. His devotion to God is similar to a mother’s love. கண்ணன் is his own child. He sings a lullaby for the child கண்ணன் in the cradle. He invites the moon to play with the child. He asks the child to clap his hands; he bathes the child with great love. He also sings of the glories of the name of Lord Rama, and prays to Him to remember him, the devotee, at the moment of his death.

தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார் composed திருமாலை and திருப்பள்ளி எழுச்சி. In the song beginning with “பச்சை மாமலை” he prefers singing about the Lord to even ruling over the celestial world.

He surrenders himself totally at the Lord’s feet. In his திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி he awakens the Lord from his sleep. He regrets that his devotion is not as intense as that of the squirrel which helped Lord Rama in building the bridge across the ocean.

திருப்பாணாழ்வார் wrote அமலனாதிபிரான். He was found as a child in the paddy field and brought up by a பாணர். Even as a child he used to sing about the Lord.

When a saint got angry with him because he was from the lower caste and did not give him way, the Lord appeared in his dream with a wound, which the saint had inflicted on the பாணர். He regrets his deed and the next day carries the பாணர் on his shoulders to the temple. Such is the devotion of திருப்பாணாழ்வார். He uses the word “ஐயோ” twice in each of his songs. This brings out the intensity of his emotion and devotion.

பெருமாள் திருமொழி in Tamil and முகுந்தமாலை in Sanskrit  were  composed  by  குலசேகர ஆழ்வார். He considers himself to be the servant of the Lord’s devotees. He longs to become a fish, a bird, a tree, or a bush on a pathway in திருவேங்கட மலை. His love for the Lord is depicted through various similes. Like plants looking at the clouds even if there is no rain, he looks up  to  the  Lord  even  if  He  shows  no  mercy. குலசேகராழ்வார் assumes the roles of Devaki, Dasaratha, and a shepherd girl, and sings of the Lord.

ஆண்டாள்  was   found  in  the  துளசிவனம் by பெரியாழ்வார். திருப்பாவை, consisting of 30 songs describes the vows undertaken by unmarried girls, and prayers for rain. The happenings at ஆய்ப்பாடி, the aims of பாவைநோன்பு, the glory of Govindan, the prayers, the consummaion of the vows, the fruits thereof, are all described in detail. In நாச்சியார் திருமொழி ஆண்டாள் talks about the Lord and her love for him. Her dream of her marriage with the Lord is also described in detail.

The writings of பெரியாழ்வார் and தொண்டரடிப்பொடியாழ்வார் formed the origins for பிள்ளைத்தமிழ் and திருப்பள்ளி எழுச்சி. two genres of the minor literature called சிற்றிலக்கியம். The சிற்றிலக்கியம் blossomed into a major literary production in the Post- Bhakti era. The loving devotion of the ஆழ்வார்கள் transports us to higher realms, doesn’t it?
