    Interview - Explanation and Classification




    In this lesson you will be made aware of the nature and scope of interviews as a mode of newsgathering.

        The three units describe an interview in terms of participants, aims and benefits, the types of interviews and the do’s and don’ts in structuring an interview.

        An interview helps to get details of a news item through personal, telephonic or written form of collecting information about an event. Questions are the tools for conducting an interview in a smooth and natural fashion but with a definite and strong approach. Two participants as in the interview of VIPs, and one interviewing others as in collecting details from a crowd are the two types of interviews. Every interview has a specific aim such as collection of details of an interesting event, bringing out the facts of an occurrence or expressing the outlook.

        The benefits of an interview include proper formation of the news item, authentic reporting, learning about inventions and schemes of use to the country and making the news attractive through photographs of actions and persons during interview.

        Interviews can be classified as casual and personality, news. News interview, news conference, briefing and breakfast meeting, telephone interview, incubated interview and kite-flying are other kinds of interviews.

        The nature of an interview expects the interviewer to have special abilities of making the interviewees accept and cooperate with him. Do’s and don’ts for an interviewer are clearly listed in this unit.

        On learning this lesson you will accept that the interview as a delicate art enacted by all concerned. You will even be trained as an interviewer, equipping you with all aspects of conducting an interview.
