His poetic urge and nationalistic spirit did not find a match in his career as a teacher. So he left for Madras,where he became a journalist. He was employed as a member in the editorial team of 'Swadesa Mitran'. He also got himself actively involved in the Indian Freedom Struggle. He organised public meetings and roused the feelings of people against the British rule. Subsequently he associated himself with 'India', a more radical Tamil daily.
