Lesson - 6
A02126 - காலம்
Time-sense is classified in this lesson. One can understand how a verb indicates the time. Different methods of signifying time in the finite forms of verbs are described.
Incomplete forms too indicate the time of action. The methods of indicating time-sense through inflexional endings can be understood.
However, it is possible that the time-sense may overlap in temporal expressions. It is called கால மயக்கம்.
Verbals viz. finites, adjectivals and adverbials indicate the time of action. Timing is a special feature of verbs. Among the nouns, the verbal nouns only indicate timing. In this sense it is almost like a finite verb.
Link forms (இடை நிலைகள்) are responsible for showing the time in Tamil verbs. Inflectional endings indicate time in the past, and not in the present-day, usage.
Words of the three time-sense, namely present, past and future may overlap for some reasons.
This lesson thus completes the study of verbs in Tamil.
