    General Introduction :

A large variety of literary forms, small in size as compared to epics, came into vogue during 12C (AD)-17C(AD). These literary forms have come to be known collectively as "Sitrilakkiangal", meaning " small literary works". These include among them forms like Kalambakam, Kovai, Parani, Pallu, Pillaithamil, Ula, etc. Each of these forms had features exclusive to them, while they also shared some common qualities of hyperbole, heroworship, sensualism, vulgar exhibitionism, etc. The social environment in which these works were created was highly degenerated. Class distinction and concomitant evils had come to stay during the period. Trade and commerce were at low ebb. Castes had multiplied in number and they came to be graded as upper and lower. People had lost initiatives for enterprise. This is the backdrop of the Tamil Culture that we see through the Sitrilakkiangal.
