    Modern Trends in Printing




    The history of printing, reasons, for introducing the art of printing in India, development of printing in India and Tamil nadu, the ancient and modern trends in printing, are discussed in this lesson.

        The art of printing has developed over the years from the inscriptions on woods and stones.

        Fonts used in printing began with Wangcheng’s wooden prints. XVIII Century China saw metallic fonts. But the father of the art of printing is Germany’s John Gootenberg of the XV century.

        The first printing machine in India was Imported from Spain to Goa in 1550 A.D. The first printing press in Tamil Nadu was established in Tharankampadi.

        Publication of pictures were done in four different methods namely woodcutting. metal engineering, etching, and lithography. Now photolithography, leno cuts, offset process and photo-engraving are also being used for printing and publishing pictures.

        Technological development yielded four types of presses like the tradle of Platers, Cylinder, Rotary and Offset printing machines. Lithography, Tele typesetter, Telex, Computerised printing, and Teleview are the modern printing techniques.

        Similarly, Tamil fonts progressed from types to point system over the years.

        You will be technically equipped with knowledge about developments in the Art of Printing throughout the world for about nine centuries. Their use in Tamil journalism registered tremendous development in 200 years.
