  • Bharathidasan, as a poet, is characterised by his strong zeal for social reformation and for his interest in preserving and promoting Tamil Language and culture. His poems present a vivid account of the Tamil community as he saw it and also a picture of how he would like the community to emerge. He was disturbed by the inequality and disharmony, discrimination and swindling, superstitions and ignorance among the people. He was averse to the high handed discriminatory attitude of the upper caste people, the blind faith in the traditions and religious beliefs, the suppression of women and the ignorance of the downtrodden. He used his poems as a means to rouse the people against all these evils. This lesson attempts to present to you Bharathidasan's vision of the ideal society. It tries to acquaint you with his poetic expressions of unreserved condemnation of the social evils such as casteist discriminations, religious fanaticism and sexual domination. The exhortations of Bharathidasan have contributed to a great extent to the eradication of untouchablity and child marriage and to the promotion of Tamil culture, humanism and emancipation of women.
