The Nayaks were traditionally Vaishnavites. However, they did not show any hatred for other religions. The followers of Islam and Christianity were given full care and protection to construct their places of worship, follow their religious practices and propagate their religion.
The Nayak Kings spent a lot for the Madurai Meenakshi temple. The temple administration was taken over by Tirumalai Nayak and he personally attended to it. Similarly the Nayak Kings did a lot of renovation at the Sri Rangam temple.
