The qualifications, duties and responsibilities of news reporters are presented in this lesson. They are an important part of any news publication.
There are five central units dealing with a news reporter, his qualifications, his duties and his responsibilities besides categorisation of news persons.
News reporter or correspondents are called Seithiyaalarkal in Tamil. Earlier, they collected news without revealing their identity. Newspapers too never published their names. In these days of transparency, their names are often published with the news reported by them. They identify, seek, search, collect and summarise news that is important to the newspaper. They can make or mar the credibility and the pride of a newspaper. They are the thinking agents and are like the heart for a journal. Considered as the foundation of a newspaper they are like deep sea pearl-seekers.
A reporter should have an ear for news, adequate education, accuracy in his presentation, speed in action, unbiased approach to reported events and ability to collect appropriate news items. Tolerance and individual efforts, good contacts, credibility, honesty, non-susceptibility to bribes, strategic performance, acceptance and self-confidence enhance his standing in this profession. Pleasant personality, clarity of expression, knowledge of tradition and modernity, and legal awareness are also requirements of a reporter.
The work and service of reporters make them social educators. People’s faith in the newspaper is established mainly by the reporters.
Reporters have to bear in mind all these to perform their functions successfully.
