Foreign invasions into Tamil Peninsula have not been too frequent. Yet it had been subjected to the foreign rule from time to time. The rule of Kalappirars is a dark period in the history of the Tamils. The period of Pallavas saw a healthy growth in arts. Later came the Moghuls, the Nayaks, the Marathahs, the English and the French. The Tamils too won several foreign lands, but they were magnanimous to return those lands to the defeated.
