Tamil of the post - Sangam era

The transition from sangam period to the post-sangam period is called Cankam Maruviya Kaalam. Changes in phonology occurred during this transition and the reasons for those changes are explained in this lesson. New pronouns of first, second and third persons are attested. New gender markers of this period are illustrated. Additions to differential markers are also presented. The forms of non-finites found during this period are also indicated.

Introduction to the transition from sangam age, phonological changes, morphology of nouns and morphology of verbs are treated in the four central unit.

It is considered that Thirukural, Cilapathikaram and Manimekalai appeared during this transition. Sangam literature is not religious in nature where as the latter two works are religious.

Phonological changes are identified as the occurrence of the consonant 'ச்' with the vowels 'அ' and 'ஐ' in the beginning of expressions. The consonant 'ய்' occurred alongwith the vowel 'ஒ' in the similar positions. Due to the intrution of Sanskrit words into Tamil the consonantal shift has also undergone change.

Morphologically, nouns underwent major changes during this transitional period.

Morphology of verbs did not undergo any major changes excepting a few.

Thus you will be able to observe the grammatical changes occurring in words and expressions when the period changes from one identified age into another when transition makes a mark in linguistic change.
