Religious Fanaticism, regional chauvinism, superstitious beliefs, casteist discrimination, - these were the evils which subjugated the Tamils to the Europeans. The first voice that rose against the whites' domination was that of Kattabomman of Panjalankurichi. Later when there were two factions of Moderates and Radicals in the fight against the Britishers, Tamil leaders (like V.O.C., Bharathi, V.V.S.Iyer, etc.,) supported the radical approach taken by Tilak. But in due course, the radicals came to accept the leadership of Gandhiji.
