4.2 போராட்ட நெறிகள்
The concept of Ahimsa was not new to the Tamils. The advent of Jainism and Buddhism, the preachings of Saivite Saints and the ethic literature have all laid the firm base for Ahimsa in the minds of Tamils. Anni Gnimili, a woman of the Sangam period, is said to have brought about a change of heart, by observing fast against the cruelties of the ruler of her time. With this traditional inclination of mind towards Ahimsa, the Tamils took part wholeheartedly in the non-cooperation movement of 1919, the Salt-satyagraha (protest against Salt-Legislation) of 1930, the boycott of foreign clothes and the like.
